Perspectives from the classroom
This edited book is a result of the research and innovation project CriticalThinking in Primary School (KriT), funded by the Research Council of Norway. The KriT-project is an interdisciplinary project aimed at developing a Didaktik forcritical thinking in primary school through engagement with children's literatureand news items. In this book, we present the results of the project relevant forresearchers, teacher educators, pre-service teachers, and others interested in howto facilitate critical thinking in a primary school context.
The chapters provide comprehensive insight into the possibilities critical thinkingmay offer in primary classrooms. The chapters are rooted in different subjecttraditions and theoretical approaches unified by a Didaktik for critical thinkinggrounded in dialogic teaching. Thus, the edited book takes a multifaceted approachto critical thinking. Five of the chapters focus on students' critical thinking, including children's agency in early literacy education, dialogues connected topicturebooks, critical writing, systems thinking, and students' socio-scientificreasoning in sustainability education. The remaining chapters focus on teachers'framing and facilitation of critical thinking, including strategies for guidingstudents into critical thinking and argumentation as well as providing them withopportunities to think critically in the classroom and beyond.
